Bayview Flowers

[flowers, plants]

Bayview Flowers is a greenhouse company in Jordan Station, Ontario that operates 340,000 square feet of greenhouses including 50,000 square feet for distribution and cut floral processing.

The Challenge/Problem

Recent challenges face by the biogas digester included:

  • Decrease of biogas generation based on less than optimum organic waste streams
  • Decrease of power generation due to poor quality biogas
  • Increased H2S content in the biogas that was causing problems for biogas customers

The company utilizes an anaerobic digestion system which converts organic waste streams into biogas that is used for fuel. In addition to biogas the system produces nutrient rich digestate that is sold commercially as an organic potting soil or fertilizer. Bayview’s digestion system is unique in that it utilizes thermophilic digestion to produce increased levels of biogas while at the same time producing pasteurized digestate. This facility is a regulated mixed anaerobic digestion facility operating under OMAFRA rules in the Nutrient Management Regulation.

SciCorp Treatment Plan and Execution

Bayview Flowers operators met with SciCorp engineers to explore the different options that would help solve their biogas issues. SciCorp engineers responded immediately and worked with the Bayview Flowers to assess the digestors and organic waste streams and developed a treatment approach that involved the following:

  • Initial application of a shock dose of 140L of BIOLOGIC SR2™ to the digestor
  • Implementation of a continuous dose of 10L of BIOLOGIC SR2™ to the digestor daily

Success

Bayview Flowers

Following a 15-day trial treatment program Bayview Flowers were able to achieve the following results:

25%
increase

25% increase in biogas and power generation despite less-than-optimal organic waste streams

70%
decrease

70% decrease in H2S present in the biogas
